A major military base (aplekton) in Asia Minor (qq.v.) on the road to the eastern frontier. Located in the theme of Opskikion (qq.v.), at an important road junction, it was the gathering point for troops from the themes of Thrakesion (q.v.) and Opsikion. Its warm springs were famous. The Arab writer Ibn Khurdadhbeh (q.v.) describes them as consisting of seven great basins, all roofed, each basin able to accommodate a thousand men. The Seljuks (q.v.) captured it in the late 11th century. It was recaptured and rebuilt by Manuel I Komnenos (q.v.) in 1175, only to fall again to the Seljuks after the battle of Myriokephalon (q.v.) the following year.
